 PUBLIC AWARENESS PROJECTS

The public awareness sector, to which A.S.I.A. has always attended with programmes of information and sensibilisation about the problems of ethnic minorities and development, has grown considerably following the recognition of competency awarded by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Various solidarity and benefit events, conferences, presentations of documentaries, photo exhibitions and educational programmes for schools have been periodically organised by A.S.I.A., as well as a project on traditional Tibetan medicine in 2000 and a project on Tibetan nomads in 2001, both financed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.


"MEET TIBET: ENVIRONMENT AND CULTURE OF THE PEOPLE LIVING AT THE TOP OF THE WORLD".

25 NOVEMBER - 5 DECEMBER 2003, BRUNICO (BZ)
The project provides better knowledge of the Tibetan region and the culture of its inhabitants and informs the public on the elements jeopardizing the ethnic, cultural and environmental survival of Tibet. The initiative endorses the idea of SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT which represents the main challenge of our century, the combination of economic development and people's wealth with the safeguard of the environment and resources.

 

OBJECTIVES:
- SPREAD KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE HISTORY, CULTURE AND ENVIRONMENT OF THE TIBETAN PLATEAU;
- STRESS THE IMPORTANCE OF SAFEGUARDING THE CULTURE AND NATURAL ENVIRONMENT OF THE TIBETAN MINORITY;
- MOTIVATE ASSOCIATIONS AND CIVIL SOCIETY TO TAKE INIATIVES TOWARDS SOLIDARITY WITH THE "THIRD WORLD", NAMELY IN FAVOUR OF THE TIBETAN PEOPLE.
These objectives will be reached through a photographic exhibit and a round of meetings that will follow three thematic paths.

1. THE PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBIT
The photos on exhibit will illustrate the social, cultural and environmental reality of the Tibetan people featuring religious ceremonies, holiday celebrations, work activities, family and friendship relations.

2. INTERCULTURAL WORKSHOPS

Tibetan Painting: tangka and mandala Eva K. Kosloski, psychiatric and expert of therapeutic art Kitchen from the "roof of the world": momos Sangye, Tibet, Amdo

3. MEETINGS AT SCHOOL
Various conferences will take place at schools in a way to actively involve the students and excite their interest.
The speakers will be ASIA's experts, long experienced in cooperation and emergency projects in the Tibetan plateau, and adepts of Tibetan culture and civilisation

Who we talk to
The initiative addresses the students, citizens, and associations of Bolzano's province, in order to spur combined initiatives of cooperation for the Tibetan people.

Promoters
Il The project, also financed by Bolzano's Autonomous Province, results from the collaboration between ASIA Onlus and Brunico's association "Verein für Städtefreundschaften - Association for the friendship between cities", which runs information and awareness activities on international cooperation and multiculturalism. We are also receiving voluntary contribution from members of Brunico's "Eine Welt Gruppe/Gruppo Terzo mondo" and from Gunther Niedermair, who coordinates the activities of "Centro giovanile UFO".


         

The Celestial Treasure. The Tibetan Art of Medicine

The aim of the venture, organised in collaboration with the Luigi Pigorini National Prehistoric Museum and the Shang Shung International Institute of Tibetan Studies, was to offer an illustrated itinerary of traditional medicine through the exhibition of Tangkas, surgical instruments and medicines, showing videos, and a series of seminars held by Tibetan and western doctors to elucidate the various therapies and approaches developed within the Tibetan tradition, the relation of the latter with conventional medicine and the possibilities for health development in Tibet.

Tibetan Nomads: The Last Transhumance? Social and Climatic Changes in the Tibetan Plateaux.

This is a Development Education project to inform the public about Tibetan nomad culture and the critical problems it is facing. Through the reconstruction of the daily life habitats of nomads, a photographic exhibition and a cycle of seminars, the venture aims to spread knowledge about the culture of the nomads and to draw attention to the problems related to the survival of a unique ecosystem and an extraordinary civilisation, with particular reference to the problems of selecting the type of development that could be envisaged for these regions and the role that could be played by international cooperation.
