Nanba Township

The population of Nanba is now around 19,000 people, including the 25 villages belonging to Nanba scattered on the surrounding mountains. It is mainly constituted by farmers, small traders and shopkeepers.
Nanba covers an area of about 326 km². The township itself is located on the shores of a river surrounded by mountains, at an average altitude of 800 m.
According to the government, 1,300 people have been reported dead and 700 missing; but, according to off-the-record sources, the amount could easily higher.
The whole population of Nanba is considered homeless and displaced.
Some people live in tents or in provisional shelters near the villages; others have left the mountains and gathered in tents together with people coming from other villages.
Near Nanba 5 displaced camps have been set up, for a total amount of about 6,000 people (about 1,500 families). At the moment, they all live in tents. “Prefabricated mobile homes” donated by other Chinese provinces will be ready within a month; they will be a shelter for displaced people for a period of 3-6 months. They are very simple and small houses made of a metal structure and divided for families of 4 people.

General conditions in Nanga township (site of the government)

Nanba Township has been almost completely destroyed, and the communication routes completely interrupted. The army took 13 days to build up an alternative landline and to clear the way from landslides and stones.
The bridge has been seriously damaged and the traffic is at risk.
Electricity was recently restored; as far as water is concerned, since the cistern has fallen down, the army has dug a big well from which some provisional water channels, bringing water to four points, extend.
Water is not safe and needs to be boiled to avoid serious infections.
The village clinic and the two schools have been completely destroyed.
The army has installed a First Aid Post in the village, from where the injured people are moved to Xiangyan base camp on military means of transports.
